Charter notes

Good to know before you book

Short, practical notes on wind, yacht types, crew and pricing. Open any card to read it here.

01 · Weather Planning around the meltemi The summer wind of the Aegean and how it shapes a week in the Cyclades.

The meltemi is a dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean in summer, usually strongest in July and August. It often builds during the day and can stay strong for several days, which makes some open crossings uncomfortable.

We plan longer legs for the morning, keep sheltered anchorages in reserve and adjust the route to the forecast. If you prefer calmer water, June and September are often gentler, and the Gulf of Fethiye or the Dalmatian islands usually offer easier sailing.

02 · Yachts Gulet, motor yacht, sailing yacht or catamaran? How the four types compare on space, speed and comfort.

Gulets are wide wooden motor-sailers with big shaded decks and a full crew, made for slow weeks with a different bay each night. Motor yachts cover longer distances quickly and usually come with air-conditioned cabins and a tender.

Sailing yachts are the quietest way to move and suit guests who want to take part. Catamarans are stable at anchor and draw little water, so they can reach shallow coves that deeper boats cannot.

03 · Crew Crewed, skippered or bareboat Who sails the yacht, and what you need for each option.

On a crewed charter, a captain and crew run the yacht and look after meals and service. A skippered charter adds a professional skipper, while you take care of the rest.

Bareboat means you sail the yacht yourself. Most countries ask for a recognised sailing licence, such as the ICC, and some also require an experienced second crew member. We confirm the rules for your country and yacht before you book.

04 · Pricing What a charter quote includes The yacht, the crew and the running costs that are usually added.

Quotes usually cover the yacht and its crew for the week. Running costs such as fuel, food, drinks and port fees are often added separately. On larger crewed yachts these are paid through an advance provisioning allowance (APA), a deposit that is settled at the end of the charter.

Gulet charters are often priced differently, sometimes with meals included. VAT and local taxes vary by country. We list exactly what each quote includes before you book.
